What to expect
A social is an evening of dancing for fun rather than a lesson. Many start with a short taster class for newcomers, then the DJ or band takes over. It is normal to ask anyone to dance – and to say no thanks politely – and nobody minds if you are new; most dancers remember their own first social.
Modern Jive (often taught as Ceroc or LeRoc) is a simple, smooth partner dance developed in Britain in the 1980s from French jive. It has no complicated footwork – classes teach moves you can use straight away to almost any music, from swing to chart pop – which makes it one of the quickest dances to pick up and a popular way to meet people.
