Your First Lindy Hop Class
Most people walk into their first class nervous and walk out grinning. Here's exactly what to expect, so you can skip the nerves and get to the grinning.
Do I need a partner?
No. Most classes rotate partners every few minutes, so everyone dances with everyone. It's the fastest way to learn, and the quickest way to make friends in a new scene.
Lead or follow?
You choose. The lead suggests the moves; the follow interprets them. Neither role is tied to gender – many dancers learn both, and schools will ask which you'd like to try.
What happens in the hour
- A warm-up, often with some solo rhythm work.
- Basic footwork: the rock step and triple step.
- A few simple partner moves, usually in six counts.
- Putting it all together to music – slowly, then a little faster.
What to bring
- Shoes that turn on a wooden floor – see what to wear.
- Water and a spare top. It's more of a workout than it looks.
- Deodorant and mints. You'll be close to a lot of people.
Then stay for the social
If there's a social dance after class, stay. You'll be surprised how much of the class you can use, and regulars love dancing with beginners. Read the pocket guide to your first social.
