How to Do a Tuck Turn
Most beginners' first turn – a six-count move where the lead 'tucks' the follow's hand in and the follow spins out to open position.
What it is
The tuck turn is a six-count move danced from open position. On the first beats the lead brings the follow a little closer and gently presses the joined hands towards the follow's middle (the "tuck"); the follow uses that energy to turn to their right and travel back out.
The counts
| Count | Lead | Follow |
|---|---|---|
| 1, 2 | Step, step – draw the follow in and tuck the hand | Step, step – come in and feel the tuck |
| 3 & 4 | Triple step, raising the hand as the follow turns underneath | Triple step, turning to your right under the arm |
| 5 & 6 | Triple step, catching the follow in open position | Triple step, finishing the turn and settling |
Tips
- Leads: the tuck is a suggestion, not a shove. Lift the hand high enough for the follow to pass underneath comfortably.
- Follows: turn on the ball of the foot and spot (keep your eyes on a point, then whip your head round) to avoid dizziness.
- Both: finish the turn in time for count 1 of the next move – the music doesn't wait.
