How to Do the Suzy Q

A twisting, travelling footwork step from the swing era – fun on your own and a playful variation inside partnered Lindy Hop.

What it is

The Suzy Q travels sideways by twisting the feet: one foot crosses in front with the heel leading, then the other steps out to the side with the toes turned in. Repeated, it looks like the feet are zig-zagging along the floor.

Step by step (travelling left)

  1. Cross the right foot in front of the left, landing on the heel with toes pointing out.
  2. Step the left foot out to the left, toes turned in.
  3. Repeat – cross, step, cross, step – keeping the knees soft.

Hands often clasp in front at chest height, swinging slightly against the hips. Reverse everything to travel right.

Where you'll see it

Suzy Q turns up in solo jazz routines and as a variation in partnered dancing – for example during open-position breaks. Like most solo steps, it gets much easier once your bounce is relaxed.
