Buck and Bubbles in High Toned (1929)

A 1929 short film starring Buck and Bubbles, the vaudeville duo of Ford 'Buck' Washington and John 'Bubbles' Sublett. John Bubbles is regarded as a founder of rhythm tap, with his syncopated style influencing generations of tap and jazz dancers. This early sound film shows the duo's comic timing, music and footwork. Watch the rhythmic accents in the feet and how they integrate dance and comedy. It sits alongside Lindy Hop in the story of Black American vernacular performance.
